About Totonoya
About 30 minutes by car northeast of central Kanazawa, tucked into a quiet mountain village surrounded by a rich variety of trees, you'll find Nouka Minshuku Totonoya — a farmhouse guesthouse born from a 50-year-old vacant house, renovated with the help of volunteers and opened to guests in 2021.
Visitors come from across Japan and abroad — so far we've welcomed guests from countries like Italy, the US, India, Malaysia and Switzerland — drawn by the unhurried rhythm of the satoyama landscape, the nostalgic charm of the old farmhouse, the vibrant flavors of food grown close to nature, and the local culture that has been woven into this place over generations.
What you'll find at Totonoya is something rare: a slower kind of time and space, a step outside the everyday. It's not only about matching the pace of nature — it's also shaped by the presence of the “yadomori” (guesthouse keeper) who looks after the house. Sharing meals, conversation, and daily tasks with the yadomori, the okami (host), and the friends who help run the guesthouse, you may find yourself reconnecting with feelings that everyday life often leaves behind.
Part of the joy of Totonoya is that no two visits are quite the same. Depending on when you come, you might join the open-air restaurant held once a month, help harvest vegetables or spend time with the goats and chickens, take part in a Bon dance festival, browse a local market, join a pottery or tea ceremony event, or even enjoy a music performance from a far-off country. And if you'd like, a short trip into central Kanazawa is a wonderful way to experience the traditional culture of the former Kaga domain, one of Japan's great historic castle towns.

Lending a hand with seasonal satoyama farming.

Sometimes, the kitchen becomes a cozy space where you can deepen bonds through cooking with guests from various places.
